SOVIET FAIRY TALE PIONEER CAMP IN SPITAK , ARMENIA 🇦🇲 2nd August 26 IJEVAN
Went ti Ijevan vis Spitak which was a gem. Took an old abondoned pass which took awhile and was just a knarly track but a nice change. Found a gret room and lovely host who cooked dinner and served breakfast.
Spitak itself did not host a major mineral-water health sanatorium, but the area is famous for the Fairy Tale Young Pioneer Camp, a youth health and recreation facility that shared the same Soviet utopian leisure ethos. Opened in 1975, the camp featured striking mosaic art, a zodiac sundial, and swimming spaces before the catastrophic 1988 earthquake and the end of the USSR halted its operations.
Camp Timeline and Features
- 1975: Founded outside Spitak as a premier regional Young Pioneer youth facility.
- Design Elements: Included decorative mosaic murals, an indoor pool with athletic themes, and a zodiac-themed mosaic sundial.
- 1988 Earthquake: The catastrophic December 7 earthquake severely damaged the region and collapsed key parts of the camp, such as the central canteen.
